EasyObjects 2.0 Free now available!

by Matthew Noonan 5. February 2007 01:33

Noonan Consulting Inc. is proud to announce the availability of EasyObjects version 2.0. This new release adds some important capabilities for the EasyObjects platform. For the first time, there will be two different versions available: a free version and a paid version (coming soon). As previously announced, this departure from previous versions allows for users to try out and use EasyObjects at no cost, and continue to do so if their needs never grow beyond the free version, but also allows for the continued growth and support for EasyObjects into the future.

EasyObjects 2.0 Free includes the following features:

  • Support for Microsoft's Enterprise Library v. 2.0 (January 2006 release) and .NET 2.0
  • Support for Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and 2005
  • All of the features found in EasyObjects 1.2, except as noted below

The paid version of EO2 contains the following enhancements over the free version:

  • Ability to switch DynamicQueryProviders using configuration settings
  • Ability to specify database logon credentials at runtime, not just through configuration
  • Support for Oracle
  • Support for the Enterprise Library Configuration Tool

There will be more announced when the paid version becomes available (including support options), but the basic differences come down to support for Oracle and being able to change DynamicQueryProviders on the fly. The free version is hard-coded to support SQL 2005, but you can switch it to SQL 2000 by commenting out one line. There is no need to support the EntLib Config Tool in the free version since this is only needed for speicifying the DynamicQueryProvider.

In sample QuickStartForm you can use:
prod.s_UnitPrice = (49.5).ToString();

Instead hardcoded string.

Guys,

Thanks for the support! It is reassuring to know not everyone feels the way the first guy did.

I seem to have messed something up with the QuickStarts, as you are finding out. I will look at it tonight and post the correction.

Thanks again, and I will double my efforts to bring you quality solutions.

You can remove source code for EasyObjects 2.0 and add reference to dll.
There is problem with Polish national currency symbols:

base.SetDecimalAsString

is not working properly when value is "45.0" - it should be "45,0" (common instead dot).

Kind reagerds

Matt,
As I posted on an earlier thread,
Having messed around with the configuration with beta V2.0 and gotten oracle woking with stored procedures. I completely understand and support this move.

(Right now my code is going through hoops to get the configuration for connections to work)

Just let us know when the paid version of 2.0 will be available and the price.

Thanks for your efforts and thanks for a great tool.

Thanks for all your hard work.
I know that people may be now looking at feature comparisons between subsonic, easy object and all the rest.  But your hard work, has  made it easier for all us developers to deliver on a promises within time and budget, and for that I thank you.
For all the developers out there weighing up ORM solutions, just remember, the best solution depends on the problem you're trying to solve, not on ticks in boxes.

I'm sorry if you all feel that way, but it seems pretty obvious that you have not tried such an undertaking yourself. It takes real dedication, time away from family and friends, and little or no financial support, in addition to having to make a living the old fashioned way.

As I said in my blog posting, there are many open source projects (NDoc being the prime example) that went the way of the dinosaurs because they went the donation-ware route, and then promptly went out of business. I would rather not be forced to retire the project for the same reasons.

You will be missed, but you are also welcome back anytime.

I think EasyObjects.NET is going the way of CodeSmith !! Suck people in with the offer of "free" or OpenSource monikers and when you have a critical mass, turn it into paid software. Oh... by the way, our free version will still be available only that you cannot do squat with it. You can use it to play little DB games at home.  This is cheap and underhanded. Bye bye EasyObjects !!

Thanks, Matt, thank you for the great work.

Although I may not need the extra enhancements on the paid version, but I would ask my client to pay for the paid version (if we decide to use EasyObjects), to show our appreciations and hope that you could transfer the monetary amount to resources on improving both future free and paid versions.

A few other thoughts, about the remark that you "can't do squat" with the free version.

Due to the fact that this project has more visibility in the Microsoft world, I'm willing to bet that the vast majority of the user base is not using Oracle, so removing that from the free version is hardly a big loss in functionality. There are no restrictions on SQL Server usage, except that you can't switch between SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 on the fly. But again, I believe this to be a minority of circumstances.

Other than those two things, everything you could do in EO 1.2 can be done in EO 2.0 Free. You can run stored procedures, load from views, use dynamic SQL and transactions...

Everything. And it is free.

After that, I am asking for compensation so EasyObjects will live on.

I think easy object is a great product. it has really helped me a lot..and everybody working on this product should definetly be rewarded... and as rightly said by matt and as per my understanding the most used feautures by the widely know .net community is infact still avalaible free. Well the developers using this product on and earning 100K / year should not complain about this product being priced. Matt and everybody has really done a great job.. Good luck matt and thanks a lot for a wonderful product.

Matt, your product seems to do a lot for us developpers and people that are complaining about your move to offer a paid version will never go really far in the IT world if he's thinking that way! These people do not think farther than the tip if their nose! Anyways, thank you for putting such a nice package and I look forward for the paid version since I plan to buy it if all the pending contracts gets signed!
You are helping real businesses that dedicates their professionnal activities toward client satisfaction both in terms of reliability AND time/budget constraints!
Thank you for that.
